Leah’s Story

We believe playing golf has some great benefits for young people and we love to hear their stories about how golf has improved their lives.

We asked Leah from Lincolnshire (one of our Presidents’ Awards winners in 2019) to explain below how much golf has helped her, this is Leah’s story:

“I started playing golf at my primary school and then continued to play StreetGolf at secondary school before attending regular PGA coaching lessons at my local HSBC Golf Roots Centre.

I have now played in the GolfSixes League both years, and have been a member of Toft Hotel Golf Club for three years. The central club committee asked me to be their junior captain for 2020, something I never dreamed I would ever be asked to do. As junior captain I look forward to promoting the junior section at Toft and creating more opportunities for all existing and new junior golfers. Since learning to play golf I have had to develop so many new skills as well as how to swing a club, and I am a different person; I was shy. I am becoming more confident as I play golf and talk with members at the golf club. With all the other skills I have gained, I now help PGA coach Darren Game with coaching the younger groups as I enjoy seeing them improve as I did, I find it a pleasure being able to pass on some of the knowledge I have gained.

I have won the Skills for Life trophy on two occasions for my passion, enthusiasm and willingness to support the other juniors at my local golf club. Even when I couldn’t play myself due to injuries, I would still go up to the golf club and coach the young, upcoming golfers because I missed golf and the fun atmosphere at the club.

Many thanks for this wonderful opportunity, it is lovely to have been asked to help promote golf, a game that has helped change my life for the better.” Leah
