The Golf Foundation is sad to report the passing of John Uzielli.
The past captain of the R&A, John was also a Golf Foundation Chairman between 2001 and 2009, leading the charity for seven and a half years.
John was born in 1937, and was an Oxford Blue from 1958 to 1960 and captained Oxford in his final year. He went on to win the President’s Putter in 1965, was a member of the winning Marlborough Halford-Hewitt team in 1972, played over 100 matches in each of the President’s Putter and Halford-Hewitt, and was a past captain of The Berkshire Golf Club and a member of Trevose Golf Club.
His last full year as Chairman of the Golf Foundation came in 2008, which was a record year financially for the charity, as £1.93 million was invested in grassroots junior golf activity in support of the Home Nations. His legacy will live on through the foundation and throughout the Home Nations and the R&A, and he will be missed by all at the Golf Foundation.
“John Uzielli led the Golf Foundation at a time of significant growth for the charity as we expanded our reach into schools under the School Sport Partnership system at the start of a new millennium,” said Brendon Pyle, CEO of the Golf Foundation. “He was a supportive and encouraging Chairman to all staff, and popular with all of our key stakeholders. He remained a strong advocate of the work of the Golf Foundation. Our condolences to his family”.
