Five school groups from the Kent area were treated to a special golfing festival at London Golf Club as part of our 70th Anniversary celebrations recently.
While the adults took to the golf course prior to the afternoon’s awards ceremony celebrating the great work being done at grassroots level across the game, the juniors from the schools were given exclusive access to the practice facility area to showcase their skills.
The kids, who were invited along due to their work with Kent Sport in delivering School Games, used the modified equipment from Golfway as they chipped, putted and drove their way through a series of games. After the event, the juniors headed to the 10th tee box to watch some of the adults in action, and some of them were even lucky enough to enjoy a quick meet and greet with former Golf Foundation President (and Ryder Cup captain!) Bernard Gallacher as he took a break from his round to meet the kids.
The five schools invited on the day were;
• Cherry Orchard Primary
• Copperfield Academy
• All Faiths Children’s Academy
• Slade Primary
• Medway Green
“Thank you to the Golf Foundation for providing the Ebbsfleet Academy Sports Leaders with an opportunity to be inspired by Golf”, said Jon Rye from Dartford School Games, who bought the leaders to this Festival. “All of the students were new to Sports Leadership and had not been involved in an event before. Your team were really good with them, encouraging and supporting throughout the festival. As with all young Sports Leaders, they were very nervous to begin with, but soon settled in and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It was great to see how the sport of Golf (which many had not been exposed to previously) inspired them to engage with the younger children; to lead their own skills station and support each other; and for some, to consider playing golf.”
